Hair grows in cycles, not continuously
Hair grows from a follicle that repeats a cycle: an active growth phase, a short transition phase, and a resting phase, after which the old hair sheds and a new one begins. Cells at the base of the follicle divide and push upward, and as they move away from their blood supply they harden into the strand you can see.
At any moment, different follicles sit at different points in this cycle, which is why healthy scalps shed some hair every day. The living work happens at the root
The visible strand is made mostly of keratin, a structural protein, and is not metabolically active. The living activity happens at the root, inside the follicle, which is why care applied to a strand can improve its condition and appearance but cannot change how the follicle behaves.

Follicles and cycles change with age
With age, growth phases can shorten and some follicles can gradually shrink, a process called miniaturization. Pigment-producing cells can also slow, which affects colour. The result can be finer strands, lower density in some areas, and changes in how quickly hair grows and sheds.
